Biography

Born in Moscow. In 1988, on completing his studies at the Moscow College of Choreography (Alexander Prokofiev’s class), he joined the Bolshoi Ballet Company. In 1991, he graduated from the performers’ faculty of the Institute of Choreography (today Institute and College have been amalgamated into the Moscow State Academy of Choreography).
He rehearsed under Nikolai Simachyov and Marina Semyonova, Nikolai Fadeyechev.
In 2008-11, he was Moscow’s Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre Director of Ballet.
In 2011, he became the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet Director.

Awards

In 1994, for his interpretation of the part of Prince Desire in The Sleeping Beauty, he was awarded the Benois de la danse International Dance Association prize.
In 1995, the Italian Danza & Danza magazine, voted Sergei Filin Dancer of the Year.
In 1996, he was awarded the title of Merited Artist of the Russian Federation.
In 2001, he was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the Russian Federation.
In 2002, Ballet magazine awarded Sergei Filin its Soul of Dance prize (in the Star of Dance nomination).
In 2004, he received the Golden Mask International Theatre prize for his interpretation of the part of Ballet Dancer in The Bright Stream (2002/03 season).
